The Engagement Ring Guide: How to Choose a Ring You'll Love Forever

An engagement ring comes down to five decisions, and once you make them in the right order, the rest is detail. Choosing an engagement ring means settling five things: the diamond shape, the setting, the carat weight, the metal, and the ring size. This engagement ring guide walks you through each decision the way we'd talk it through in the studio — clearly, honestly, and without the pressure — so you can choose a ring you'll still love in thirty years.

At Alya Stone, every engagement ring is built around an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond set in solid recycled gold, made to order in about two to three weeks. That combination — a real diamond, honest materials, made for you — is what lets you spend your decisions on the things that actually shape the ring, rather than on markup.

The five decisions, in order

Most people start with carat or price. We'd gently suggest starting with shape, because the shape of the diamond decides the entire character of the ring — everything else is built around it. Here's the order we recommend:

  1. Diamond shape — the silhouette and personality of the ring.
  2. Setting — how the diamond is held and framed.
  3. Carat weight — the size of the stone, balanced against shape and budget.
  4. Metal — the colour and karat of the solid gold band.
  5. Ring size — the one detail you can't eyeball.

1. Choose the diamond shape

The diamond's shape (sometimes called its cut) is the single most visible choice you'll make. A round brilliant reads as timeless and throws the most light; an oval looks larger for its weight and lengthens the finger; an emerald cut is quiet, architectural and modern. There's no “best” shape — only the one that looks most like the person wearing it.

Round and oval are the two most-requested silhouettes, but cushion, emerald, pear and marquise each have a devoted following. If you're weighing them up, our diamond shapes guide compares all ten side by side, and our oval lab-grown diamond guide goes deep on the most popular fancy shape. You can also browse by silhouette: round, oval, cushion and emerald.

2. Choose the setting

The setting is how the diamond is held and framed by the band — and it changes the ring's feel as much as the stone does. A solitaire is pared-back and lets the diamond speak. A hidden halo adds a secret ring of pavé under the stone for extra sparkle without changing the silhouette. A three-stone design carries meaning — past, present and future. A toi et moi sets two stones side by side for two people. A bezel wraps the diamond in a rim of gold — the most secure, most modern choice.

If a setting feels overwhelming, start with how the wearer lives: a bezel or low solitaire suits hands-on, active days; a cathedral or halo suits someone who loves a little drama. Our engagement ring settings guide breaks down every style, and the solitaire guide covers the most-loved one in detail.

3. Decide on carat weight

Carat is weight, not size — and because of that, two diamonds of the same carat can look quite different depending on shape. Elongated cuts like oval, marquise and pear spread their weight across the finger and read larger; round and cushion sit more compactly. A one-carat diamond is the most-requested size and a beautiful, balanced starting point; our 1 carat guide shows how it looks across shapes.

Because Alya Stone diamonds are lab-grown, you're never choosing between size and quality. Every stone is graded D–F in colour and VS clarity or better, and IGI-certified at one carat and up — so you can size up to two or three carats and still keep the same icy-white, eye-clean diamond. To understand what actually moves the needle on a stone, read the 4Cs of lab-grown diamonds.

4. Pick the metal

Every Alya Stone band is solid recycled gold, never plated — available from 9k to 18k, in yellow, white and rose. Plated jewellery wears thin; solid gold becomes a modern heirloom. Karat is about durability and colour depth (higher karat is richer and softer; lower karat is harder-wearing), while the colour is purely personal.

A quick way to choose: warm skin tones and a vintage mood lean yellow gold; cool tones and a crisp, contemporary look lean white gold; rose gold flatters almost everyone and reads romantic. White gold also makes a diamond look whiter still, while yellow gold can make a near-colourless stone glow.

5. Get the ring size right

Size is the one decision you can't judge by eye. If it's a surprise, borrow a ring she already wears on that finger and have us match it, or ask a sibling or close friend who might know. Our ring size guide walks through measuring at home, and because each ring is made to order, we'll craft it to the exact size you need. Fingers also change slightly with temperature and time of day — measure when warm, not first thing on a cold morning.

Why choose a lab-grown diamond

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — the same carbon crystal, the same hardness, the same fire — grown in a few weeks rather than mined over millennia. It is identical to a mined diamond optically and chemically; the only difference is origin. That origin means a traceable, conflict-free stone and far more diamond for the same outlay, which is why every Alya Stone engagement ring is built around one.

If you're weighing lab-grown against mined, our lab-grown vs natural comparison lays out the differences plainly, certification explained covers IGI, GIA and GCAL reports, and do lab-grown diamonds hold their value gives our honest take.

Three rings to start with

If you're not sure where to begin, these three cover the most-loved directions — a clean solitaire, a quietly glamorous hidden halo, and a meaningful toi et moi.

A note for Hong Kong & Singapore shoppers

Buying an engagement ring in Hong Kong or Singapore used to mean a markup for the privilege. Because Alya Stone is built around lab-grown diamonds and made to order, a one-carat solitaire starts at HK$9,880, with transparent pricing across carat and shape. For local context, see our guide to lab-grown diamond prices in Hong Kong & Singapore and where to buy lab-grown diamonds across the region.

The Alya Stone difference

We make engagement rings the way we'd want one made for us: a certified lab-grown diamond, solid recycled gold that's never plated, and a setting crafted to order rather than pulled from a tray. It's the opposite of a rushed purchase under bright lights — a ring chosen calmly, made deliberately, and meant to be worn for the rest of your story. That's what we mean when we say a modern heirloom.

Frequently asked questions

How much should an engagement ring cost?

There's no fixed rule — the old “two or three months' salary” line was a marketing invention. A better approach is to decide what you're comfortable spending, then let shape and carat fit that figure. Because Alya Stone rings are built around lab-grown diamonds, a one-carat solitaire starts at HK$9,880, so your budget buys more diamond and better gold.

What is the most popular engagement ring shape?

The round brilliant remains the most-requested shape for its timeless look and maximum sparkle, followed closely by the oval, which looks larger for its carat weight and elongates the finger. Cushion and emerald cuts are the next most loved.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined one — the same crystal, the same hardness, the same fire. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled environment rather than mined. Every Alya Stone diamond is IGI-certified at one carat and above.

How do I find out my partner's ring size without them knowing?

The easiest way is to borrow a ring they already wear on that finger and have us match it. You can also ask a close friend or family member, or use our ring size guide to measure at home. Since every ring is made to order, we can craft it to the exact size — and adjust later if needed.

How long does a made-to-order engagement ring take?

Most Alya Stone engagement rings are crafted and ready to ship in about two to three weeks, because each one is made to order rather than held in stock. If you're working to a proposal date, tell us and we'll plan around it.
