How to Build a Charm Necklace & Bracelet

Solid gold cable-chain necklace on greige linen with gemstone birthstone charms ready to add — building a charm necklace

To build a charm necklace, start with a solid-gold base chain or connector necklace, then add the charms that tell your story — a birthstone for each person you love, an initial, a lucky number, a meaningful symbol — balancing their sizes around a focal point. It is the easiest way to wear your narrative, and you can keep adding to it for years. Here is exactly how to do it, whether you are styling a necklace or a bracelet.

How to build a charm necklace, step by step

Every charm piece in our Curation Suite is made in solid 9k recycled gold and set with lab grown diamond or gemstones, so the look stays cohesive however many charms you collect. Build in three steps.

Step 1 — Choose your base

Your base is the chain that carries everything. Two routes:

A finer cable chain suits petite charms and delicate layering; a bolder paperclip or curb chain carries medium and grand charms with presence.

Step 2 — Choose your charms

This is where the necklace becomes yours. Mix from across the Charms & Accents collection:

Step 3 — Balance & arrange

A few simple rules make any combination look considered:

  • Pick a focal point. Let one charm — often a grand or medium size — sit centre, with smaller petite charms flanking it.
  • Work in odd numbers. Three or five charms tend to look more natural than an even, symmetrical row.
  • Vary size, repeat metal. Mixing petite, medium and grand charms adds rhythm; keeping them all solid gold keeps it cohesive.
  • Leave room to grow. Start with two or three and add a charm to mark each new occasion.

Charm necklace layering ideas

Once your main charm necklace is set, layer it with one or two plain chains at different lengths — say a 40cm and a 45cm — so the charms sit at the centre and the layers frame them. Keep one chain busy with charms and the others clean, so the eye knows where to land. A single statement charm on a fine chain also layers beautifully under a collar or open shirt.

How to build a charm bracelet

The same logic works on the wrist. Start with a chain bracelet from our Bracelets collection, then add charms — but fewer of them, since a bracelet has less room than a necklace. Two or three petite charms, or one medium charm as a focal point, is usually the sweet spot. Birthstone and initial charms are especially lovely on a bracelet, where they catch the light as you move.

A base chain plus a couple of charms is all you need to begin — here are four pieces to start with:

Charm necklace FAQ

How many charms should I put on a necklace?

There is no rule, but three to five charms usually looks balanced on a necklace, with one larger charm as a focal point. Start with two or three and add more over time — a charm necklace is meant to grow.

What is the best chain for a charm necklace?

A connector (carabiner) necklace lets you add and reorder charms yourself, while a classic cable or paperclip chain gives a cleaner line. Choose a finer chain for petite charms and a bolder one for medium or grand charms.

Can I add charms myself?

Yes — our connector necklaces and bracelets are designed to open so you can clip charms on and rearrange them whenever you like. It is part of the Curation Suite system.

Are the charms solid gold?

Yes. Every charm is made in solid 9k recycled gold — never plated — and set with lab grown diamond or gemstones, so the whole stack ages beautifully as a modern heirloom.

Do charm necklaces make a good gift?

They are one of the most personal gifts you can give. Begin someone’s collection with a base chain and a single meaningful charm — a birthstone, an initial or a number — and they can keep building it over time. Pieces are made to order, typically in about 10–14 days.
