Pear Cut Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Rings: A Guide

Pear-cut lab-grown diamond engagement ring concept — clear teardrop crystal on pale stone in soft daylight

A pear shaped lab-grown diamond engagement ring pairs the soft sparkle of a round brilliant with the elegant point of a marquise, giving you a teardrop that looks larger than its carat weight and elongates the finger beautifully. At Alya Stone, every pear engagement ring is set with an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond (D–F colour, VS clarity or better) in solid gold, made to order. This guide covers what makes the pear cut special, how to choose the right length-to-width ratio, the settings that suit it best, and the pear rings in our collection.

What is a pear cut diamond?

The pear cut — also called a teardrop — is a hybrid shape: rounded on one end like a round brilliant and tapered to a single point on the other like a marquise. It carries 58 brilliant facets, so it returns plenty of fire and brightness while reading as more distinctive than a classic round. Worn with the point toward the fingertip, it visually lengthens the hand; worn east-west (point to the side), it becomes a quietly modern statement.

Because the pear is an elongated shape, it spreads more across the finger than a round of the same weight, so a 1–2 carat pear often looks a touch larger than the number on the certificate. That efficiency is part of its appeal.

Pear vs round vs oval: how to choose

Shape Look Finger effect Watch for
Pear Brilliant sparkle with a single point Elongating, looks larger per carat Bow-tie shadow; protect the point
Round Maximum, symmetrical sparkle Classic, compact Smallest spread for the carat
Oval Brilliant, soft and symmetrical Elongating, no points Bow-tie shadow

If you love a round brilliant’s fire but want something with more character and a flattering, lengthening line, the pear is the natural choice. If you prefer a fully symmetrical silhouette, compare it with our oval cut guide and the round brilliant guide.

Choosing the right pear: length-to-width ratio

A pear’s personality is set by its length-to-width (L:W) ratio — how slender or rounded the teardrop appears.

L:W ratio Appearance
1.40–1.50 Rounded, plump teardrop — soft and full
1.50–1.60 The classic, most-loved balance
1.65–1.75 Slender, elongated — the most finger-lengthening

There is no “correct” ratio — it’s personal taste. We recommend viewing the diamond face-up for a bow-tie: a faint dark band across the centre that some pears show. A well-cut pear keeps it minimal. Symmetry matters too: the point should line up with the apex of the curve so the stone sits straight.

The best settings for a pear engagement ring

The one rule with a pear is to protect the point, which is the most exposed part of the stone. Beyond that, the shape is wonderfully versatile:

  • Classic solitaire — a slim band with a V-prong cradling the point keeps all eyes on the diamond, as in the June Pear Classic Solitaire and its tilted sibling.
  • Hidden halo — a concealed ring of pavé under the stone adds sparkle and lift from the side, seen in the Aura Pear Hidden Halo.
  • Cathedral pavé — arched shoulders and a pavé band frame the teardrop, as in the Cora Pear Cathedral.
  • Bezel — a full metal rim protects the point completely for an active, modern wearer, like the Remi Tilted Pear Bezel.
  • Toi et moi — pair the pear with a round for a two-stone “you and me” ring, as in the Crest and Nectar. See our toi et moi guide.

Why a lab-grown pear diamond

A lab-grown diamond is chemically and optically identical to a mined one — same hardness, same fire — grown in weeks rather than mined over millennia. Because the elongated pear already gives you more visible size per carat, a lab-grown stone lets that advantage stretch further, so your money buys more presence on the finger. Each Alya Stone diamond is IGI certified at one carat and above, D–F in colour and VS clarity or better, set in solid gold that is never plated. Frequently asked questions

Which way should you wear a pear engagement ring?

Most people wear the point toward the fingertip, which lengthens the finger. There’s no rule, though — pointing toward the hand or wearing it east-west are both elegant, modern choices.

Do pear diamonds look bigger than round?

Yes. Because the pear is elongated, it spreads more across the finger than a round of the same carat weight, so it generally looks a little larger face-up.

What is the bow-tie effect?

It’s a faint dark band that can appear across the centre of elongated brilliant cuts. A well-cut pear keeps it subtle; we recommend viewing the stone face-up before choosing.

What length-to-width ratio is best for a pear?

Around 1.50–1.60 is the classic, most popular balance. Slimmer ratios (1.65–1.75) look more elongated; fuller ratios (1.40–1.50) look rounder. It comes down to personal taste.

Are pear engagement rings durable?

The point is the only vulnerable area, so we set it with a protective V-prong or a bezel. Set well and worn with normal care, a pear lab-grown diamond ring lasts a lifetime.
